IASSCS Newsletter Content
Year 1, #1, 2014
Welcome to the first edition of IASSCS’s Newsletter. A new endeavor, the newsletter is part of a bid to strengthen our outreach and keep members—plus participants of conferences and trainings and research scholars—informed of IASSCS’s activities. We are a growing presence within the academic and activist world, drawing together a large tapestry of multiple disciplines and important sites of activism.
IASSCS’ OUTGOING BOARD MESSAGE
It is with much pleasure that I welcome you to the inaugural issue of the IASSCS newsletter! Having served as the Chair of the IASSCS Board of Directors for the past three years, I look back on our advancement as an organization with a great sense of satisfaction for all that we have accomplished.
IASSCS’s NEW BOARD: CAN YOU HELP?
This is an exciting time for our Association. Since its creation in 1997, IASSCS has grown to become what we believe to be one of the world’s best ‘meeting places’ for academics and activists interested in issues of sexuality, power, and social justice. The conferences we organize every other year are, of course, the single clearest representation of IASSCS’s work, but under the guidance of previous Boards the Association has grown. As the new Board, it is our job to find funding to help IASSCS continue its work.
IASSCS RESEARCH GRANT
In early 2012, members of IASSCS’ Research and Training Committee were faced with the task of selecting just 10 recipients of our Emerging Scholars Research Fellowships. The call for applications resulted in 165 applications from emerging scholars across the world, and the richness of the work represented by those applications reminded us all of just why IASSCS exists: to provide a space for activists and academics whose work seeks to foreground the political, social, cultural and emotional complexity of lived experience of sexuality and to explore the shifting relationships of power and knowledge.
WHAT’S A CONFERENCE GOT TO DO WITH IT?
Argentina recovered its political democracy in 1983. Since then, the life at the universities resumed its energies, and - little by little - inquiries about gender and sexualities gained force and legitimacy. These collective efforts have been articulated and nurtured with peers in Latin America and elsewhere.
Instigated by the Buenos Aires conference’s main theme, ‘love and the marketplace’, the Latin American Center on Sexuality and Human Rights - CLAM organized a satellite event to celebrate its 10th anniversary at IASSCS 2013.
We have a new Forum page to share ideas and research & policy initiatives! IASSCS forums are a space for debate and sharing ideas and opportunities; all IASSCS users are allowed to read and post information.
NEW RELEASE: ‘THE SEXUAL HISTORY OF THE GLOBAL SOUTH’
The Sexual History of the Global South explores the gap between sexuality studies and post-colonial cultural critique. Featuring twelve case studies, based on original historical and ethnographic research from countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the book examines the sexual investments underlying the colonial project and the construction of modern nation-states.
