The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the USA's foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. Its mission is to defend and promote the fundamental principles and values embodied in the Bill of Rights, the U.S. Constitution, and the New York Constitution, including freedom of speech and religion, and the right to privacy, equality and due process of law for all New Yorkers.

The Reproductive Rights Project (RRP) of the NYCLU is the only New York State-based legal organization that focuses on reproductive rights. RRP defines reproductive rights broadly to include not only abortion rights and access, but also birth control, reproductive and sexual health, equal treatment of pregnant and parenting women in employment and education, comprehensive and medically accurate sex and HIV/AIDS education, and patient privacy.

The NYCLU is also a leader in protecting and fighting for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The NYCLU has been one of New York State's leading advocates for the rights of LGBT people, and works to extend constitutionally guaranteed rights to citizens who are often the victims of hate crimes, workplace discrimination and marginalization. The NYCLU works on a local and state-wide level and uses a multi-pronged strategy of litigation, legislation, community organizing and public education.
